Archetypes

'The truth is out there. . . or is it?'

People seem to need archetypes, beings greater than themselves.
Archetypes and Symbols - a web site
For much of human history people had gods and devils, magic, witches, spirits, goblins, angels, demons, kings, queens, emperors and dragons. Science changed things for many people. Some said that science alone explained reality - there were no mythic beings - whilst other felt that science was not enough and 'new age' beliefs became important to people (which were really just old things which science thought had gone away).

Surely in all these universes, full of an infinite number of galaxies there must be other beings travelling around. Our radio and television broadcasts have been in existence long enough to have travelled only a short way across our home galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, which is 100,000 light years across and 1,000 light years deep, with our solar system trailing way off towards the edge - so perhaps no one has noticed us yet. If they do we may not be around long enough for them to get here - if they have been watching our television they probably won't want to bother.

Modern myths give us supermen - touched by some nuclear force who can fly but not be killed and superstars who can stay young and beautiful for ever, thanks to science. We see them in films, on tv. and in Hello magazine. Today's daemons are impersonal governments, Cancer (this has a big 'C' because it is a personification of a frightening illness), terrorists and beings from 'outer space'.
