Glossary

 

Electronic book - book produced to be read on computer or in a dedicated device. Note. It may be a purely linear text with the screen taking the place of the codex form but without any use of hypertext.

Electronic Publishing - distribution of information using computer based media. Either online or off-line.

Electronic text - text displayed though some form of electronic publishing.

Gender - Socially and culturally constructed aspects of the two sexes. That is those differences which are not biological.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language. The language used to by web design programs to design web pages and by web browsers to display pages.

Hypertext - system for viewing information (text, sound graphics) on a computer with writing spaces or Lexias linked to further spaces.

Hypertext fiction, Hyperfiction- Nonlinear works of fiction designed using html, Storyspace or other hypertext system.

Hyper link - link within or between documents in some form of hypertext.

Internet - global computer network.

Lexia - writing space and its contents (text, image etc.)

Link - symbol, text etc. which when clicked leads to another document, screen etc. also called hyperlink.

Online - connected to the world wide web or other network.

Path - route taken through a number of links

Reading - a reading - path taken through a hypertext where text frames may be read in different orders or omitted.

Text - 1) words in a book or other media 2) body of writing such as a poem, novel, play etc. 3) in hypertext may also include sound and graphics.

Web - 1) World Wide Web 2) linked hypertexts for instance on a theme. Hypertext reference system.

World Wide Web - hypertext system publishing information on the Internet.
