Victory Gardens

Fragmentation

One quality of both the individual texts

and the way in which they unfold

as one attempts to navigate through them

is their unpredictability;

behaviors seem unmotivated and

it is almost impossible

to find the antecedents of any action.

Things, such as car-chases or sex-scenes

are simply taking place.

Whilst this is reminiscent of an action film

in a film there is usually some dénouement.

Victory Gardens never ends

- or it ends suddenly by simply coming to a stop with a blank screen.

This produces a sense of menace and helplessness.

This structure also adds to the

sense of fragmentation.

At one moment it

follows a story line

and set of characters,

at the next the screen fragments, goes black and comes to a

full stop.

To by-pass this it is necessary to pull back from the text,

use the navigation tools or use the back control or 'history'

to enter at another point or

start a new set of links.

The reader selects

each reading but is not in control

of that selection - unless she actively manipulates the text.

To do so produces another level of fragmentation.
