Snake Soup

Innocence

Slithering silent through grass
not sin, not innocence either
although there were daisies.
Daisy chains, long as skipping ropes
withering to twigs in the afternoons' summer.
Girls in blue dresses and white socks,
knowingly cruel, secretly perverse.
Sin was beaten out
under the all seeing eye,
by His daughters, Brides in Christ.
Eyes everywhere, spies everywhere,
blame, betrayal, sacrifice.
Statues, stone archways, dark forbidden stairs:
even the building is menacing.
The Sisters, their feet silent on the tiled floors,
rustle from their black robes until too late.
The cane snakes out from its hiding place,
to bite sharply into bare flesh, without a cry or word.
