Body of Glass
Reproductive Technology Reproductive technology is used in all cultures portrayed in Body of Glass. Shira is one of the very few women who can conceive and carry without technological help. Disease and pollution have decimated fertility levels. This does not seem to apply to the poor, the residence of 'the glop' (megalopolis). They are still breeding and providing an unskilled labour force. The use of sperm banks is common. Shira herself was conceived with the use of donated sperm - from a now diseased scientist. The same scientist was also Nili's grandfather. Nili's society is all female and so makes extensive use of reproductive technology. Presumably only female eggs are implanted. Although the presence of a father is no longer necessary Patriarchy as a social structure remains strong within the multis.
