gender is constructed through:

* the descriptions of male and female character
* the social roles of the character
* the use of language, including dialogue
* the actions of the characters

Most of the characters appear to fit stereotypes in one dimension whilst in others they transcend or invert them.

Gender issues are explored through the story of Yod the cyborg, who is at once male but also superior to men and with female sensibilities.

Ideas of gender are also considered in relation to the 'net'.
