The macho men in Victory Gardens steal cars and are involved in car chases.
If cars are symbolic of penises
then presumably stolen ones are erect penises. Especially if they are Porsches.
The men are clearly excited.
After stealing a 'microbus' some students
take part in its attempted destruction in front of Thea's house.

Though most of them were pretty blasé about smashing cars (again? ), the act took on new meaning for them when it became part of a violent political statement. It was a whole new ballgame.
