Stereotypes

The nature / nurture debate continues over aggression and other aspects of behavior related to gender. It is argued that there are differences in male and female brains which determine whether an individual believes him/herself to be male or female, regardless of physical development.

Our brains could be hardwired to be male or female long before we begin to grow testes or ovaries in the womb. This discovery might explain why some people feel trapped in a body that's the wrong sex. It could also lead to tests that reveal the true "brain sex" of babies born with ambiguous genitalia.

It may be your brain not your genitals that decides what sex you really are. (7)

If there are differences in the 'hard wiring' of individual's brains this does not preclude the effects of society in shaping how differences are expressed. There are the effects of early experience on development, the influence of peer groups, and the social options available to the individual.
