Roswell

Probably the most famous 'conspiracy' case of all time

On July 4th. 1947, during a thunder storm something crashed 75 miles north of Roswell, New Mexico. Observers thought that the stuff they found looked rubbery. There were bits of sticky tape with writing on it and some thin wood. The Air Force said that it was the remains of a weather balloon brought down by the storm. There is some suggestion that the Air Force were also running tests to devise an early warning system against nuclear attack. If so they would not have wanted anything to leak out about it. The case was forgotten until 1978 when the story of an alien craft was suggested (by a man who had seen the debris as a child), he told researchers about his ideas. The documentary programme 'UFOs are real' came out in 1979. The idea was popular. People were eager to find out about any government conspiracy. The Spielberg film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind had been released in 1977.

Many people believed that an alien space ship landed, complete with alien pilot or passengers and that the US military concealed the truth, used the technology for reverse engineering and dissected the unfortunate aliens.

Some people thought that aliens could be higher life forms, and rather than dissecting us they had come to teach us. Aliens became part of the New Age and personal development movement.

Aliens and New Age Mysticism

All sorts of ideas became conflated and used as a starting point for films and TV.
