Incubi and Sucubi Were the demons who not only rode the helpless sleeper, they also used them sexually. In ages where many were monks or nuns, vowing chastity sexual thoughts and dreams were considered sacrilegious so sexual dreams were seen as the work of the devil. The Incubus is a male figure, often monstrous, who sexually uses the helpless female dreamer. Nuns, sometimes finding themselves pregnant could blame such beings for their condition. This is a famous illustration of such a visitor, though not actually raping the victim. The sucubi in contrast are often beautiful temptresses revealing their true demonic nature once the male sleeper has been seduced a sucubus. In our permissive age sexual nightmares have to be very transgressive to engender such fear. We do not normally feel threatened by demons (people who do are considered ill generally) but aliens? In a scientific age aliens could be thought all powerful. |
