Abductees - their stories
So who gets abducted? Mainly Americans, unsurprisingly. But its not just the "p' white trash" or people living in distant
deserts and mountains - no, a great many abductees live in New York. This may not be surprising as a great many Americans live there,
as do a great many therapist, hypnotists and other gurus. In New York the abducted can find a range of support groups to join.
'Abductees' have things in common with other trauma survivors, they report lost time, sleep disturbances and nightmares.
Many abductees say that they did not remember their abduction, they just knew that something terrible had happened, but after
joining a group, or visiting a therapist the memories
began to surface; many 'researchers' encouraged subjects via suggestion or hypnotism to develop these 'memories'. Support groups for
'survivors of alien abduction' provide an arena for recurrent reinforcement of these 'memories' as well as providing a community for the
distressed person. This serves several functions. Many groups are focussed on the idea of abduction as
spiritual insight or proof that the individual is special in some way, one of 'the chosen ones'.
Talking to the group gives the individual their chance to be special, part of the 15 minutes of fame
culture. It can be a reason to be interviewed or appear on TV chat shows.
People who believed
themselves wrongly accused as perpetrators of child abuse sued therapists on grounds of 'false memory
syndrome'. Aliens are not around to press charges. |

where they discuss some 'myths' about false memories.
Experiments show that the degree
of emotion attached to a 'memory' does not prove its reality. People calling themselves
therapists, using techniques of hypnosis and suggestion, even unwittingly, have 'uncovered'
people with more multiple sub personalities than the average person has acquaintances.
They have helped others believe that they were once an ancient king, Roman centurion, pirate or princess.
